Local Music: Industry Lifeblood

Big Bang, a South Korean boy band, was last week awarded the title of World's Best Group, by the World Music Awards (WMA).

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents the interests of more than 1300 recording companies worldwide, provides WMA with the names of the best selling artists from across all major markets.

Recent IFPI data on top selling albums in 2013, shows that investment in local repertoire remains the lifeblood of the international music industry, with the top 10 selling album charts in Japan and South Korea for example, dominated by 100% local repertoire albums, 90% in Brazil, 70% in Germany, and 50% in Malaysia.
