TV Viewers Sample More Shows

Despite the proliferation of online media, channel surfing remains the main way young TV viewers discover new shows to watch, according to recent research conducted by Viacom International Media Networks.

The study, called TV Re[Defined], surveyed more than 10,000 people between 6 and 34 years old in 14 countries worldwide, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore in Asia.

Picking up on new shows by browsing linear channels is especially pronounced in the Philippines and Indonesia, Viacom discovered, while Malaysia and Singapore are more aligned with global norms.

An online presence can help reinforce interest, although it is linear TV that usually clinches people as viewers. There are some variations in Asia, however.

The picture is more mixed in Singapore, while TV dominates the content discovery journey in Indonesia.

Our slideshow has more detail, on how viewers in all four markets find out and become committed followers of TV shows in a landscape where there is more to watch than ever.
